Character Name: The Iron Bull or just Bull for short
Series: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Age: Thirties
From When?: After the events of Dragon Age Inquisition ended, going with the option of saving the Chargers at the Storm Coast.
Inmate/Warden:
Warden.
The Bull is an observant guy who does enjoy the challenge of solving the puzzle someone is. He is a friendly guy as well and he is not easily intimidated. He is used to being a leader and inspiring others, having lead the Chargers for many years. He also has a soft spot for the misfits and outcasts and once he has taken someone properly under his wing and started caring about them he will go through hell and high water for them. Or as his history shows, throw away his entire life and culture for them. As a member of the Ben-Hassrath it won’t be the first time he has ‘rehabilitated’ someone, though the reeducation methods of the Ben-Hassrath is most likely not accepted at the barge.
Item: A dragon’s tooth necklace.
Abilities/Powers:
None, other than that he is big and strong, but not more than is reasonable for a Qunari. He is also a good fighter and good at observing people.
Personality:
The Iron Bull is friendly and quite jovial, most of the time. He was raised in a strict belief system called the Qun but his behaviour is in clear violation of that, drinking, sleeping around and overindulging as much as he is working if not more. He enjoys the freedom he has been given and seems to not take anything too seriously. That includes himself. He feels he has no need to prove himself to anyone as those who matter already know of his abilities.
Despite this the Iron Bull still believes in the Qun and while he doesn’t attempt to convert people he will not apologize for the way of life he was raised in. He will gladly discuss it and attempt to explain it to others however.
The one thing the Iron Bull takes seriously are demons. The way they have a tendency to take over and cause mages to become out of control does not work well with the Qun and one of the worst stages of his life was when he was stationed fighting out of control mages. On the other hand he greatly enjoys hunting dragons, as well as hear stories about hunting dragons. If he comes across anyone who claims to have killed one he will gladly buy them a drink and try to get the story out of them.
The Iron Bull is loyal to his friends, and he will often go out of his way to help those in need. It is why Krem managed to convince him to join the Inquisition and why he has people like Krem around him. His band of mercenaries is more like a band of misfits that feels like his family. He is going to miss that and start looking for something similar on the Barge.
The Iron Bull feels lost after he chose to turn his back on the Qun to save his men during a vicious attack at the Storm Coast. He became Tal-Vashoth after this, a Qunari who have left the Qun, and a member of a group he previously hunted down. He has lost his ties to his people and culture and he is not sure how to deal with that.
Barge Reactions:
At first he’ll try and look at it like just another strange job, imagine all the information he can bring back to Par Vollen when he is accepted back into Qunari society. He will try get to know the others, likely even invite all the other wardens to his place for a drink and a game of Wicked Grace. In dark moments doubt will start to creep in however, how can he be sure this isn’t the fade and the Admiral isn’t some demon out to eat his soul.
Day to day he will be friendly enough, both with his fellow wardens and the inmates. He may even start to collect another band of misfits like his Chargers if there are people who fit his idea of it. Breaches and Floods on the other hand has a high chance of making him a lot more suspicious that this is a part of the Fade. Dragons and other creatures that to him represents the wild is a challenge as a hunter and he might have trouble seeing them as people instead of something to be hunted and killed.
Technology will confuse him at first, but he is curious and willing to learn. The Bull is quite observant and has a good memory, he enjoys learning new things. If people ask him about the Qunari or the Qun he will gladly tell them about it.
Deal:
His place back with the Qunari and him never having been thrown out to be Tal-Vashoth.
History:
The Iron Bull was raised in Par Vollen, the main city of the Qunari. The Qunari follows a system called the Qun where each member is assigned a role. The Iron Bull was Ben-Hassrath, the secret police of the Qunari. For many years he operated as a very good Ben-Hassrath, spying and hunting down Tal-Vashoth, Qunari who have left the Qun.
Then he was sent to Seheron, an island where the Qunari and the rival Tevinter Imperium have been fighting for control over the locals who resist them both. During his time there the Iron Bull saw plenty of bad fights, Tevinter blood mages tearing people apart and the horrors of guerrilla warfare. There is a limit to how much of that a mind can take and The Iron Bull hit that limit. Broken and burnt out, the Ben-Hassrath gave him the job of setting up a mercenary company and spying on the nobles of Orlais and Ferelden.
The Bull then created The Bull’s Chargers, a band of misfits and mercenaries. Living outside the Qun he took to drinking and indulging. The fights of Seheron had convinced him to live life to its fullest while he was still alive. One day he spotted a Tevinter tribune and his soldiers attacking a deserter and he decided to save the young man. In the resulting fight a flail took out his left eye. After having saving the soldier he decided to recruit him into the Chargers and Krem became his second in command.
It was Krem who convinced the Iron Bull that the Chargers should join the Inquisition and Krem handles many of the day to day runnings of the mercenary band. The Iron Bull continued to send reports to the Ben-Hassrath while he was working of the Inquisition and when the Inquisitor wanted an alliance with the Qunari, the Iron Bull set up a meeting. During the meeting a group of Venetori, Tevinter blood mages who worship a wannabe god, attack the group and the Iron Bull is forced to chose between saving his men or saving the Qunari battleship that could help the Inquisition.
He chose to save the Chargers and thus is walking away from the Qun, becoming Tal-Vashoth. This is a big change for him, up until this point he has had no choice, others always dictating his moves for him. The Inquisitor takes pity on him and the orders give him some sort of structure until they have defeated the wannabe god.
After they won there were many smaller rifts into the world of demons that the Inquisitor had to close. The Iron Bull and his chargers went ahead to hold back the tide of one while the Inquisitor dealt with another. What they hadn’t anticipated was the strength of the demons coming out of this one. It was a vicious fight, and as the demons closed in, the Iron Bull charged at them to buy his men time to get to safety. He just saw the Inquisitor arrive at the rift when he felt a demon’s claws close on his throat.
Sample Journal Entry:
Trying to figure out how this thing works is like headbutting a dragon. Painful and useless. I see it lights up, I hear other people talk, but I haven’t figured out how to turn it off yet. You have any idea how hard it is to sleep when people keep fucking jabbering on? Impossible. I bet Krem could figure it out, that boy was always too smart for his own good.
What are they going on about now? I don’t even know. Maybe I should just ‘forget’ it somewhere so I can sleep. Or you know… Take care of some … personal matters. Then again, this fucking fadeship would find a way to throw it back at me at the worst possible time.
Sample RP:
The large Qunari ignored the looks he got as he stepped into the dining hall. The looks were nothing different than those he had gotten back at Thedas. After all most Ferelden taverns didn’t have a Qunari carousing in them after all, it did tend to catch people’s attention. He made his way over to the food options, frowning a little as he looked over them. Well, it wasn’t worse than most of what he had had in said Ferelden taverns but he did miss some good beer and company to wash it down with.
He hummed the favorite drinking song of the Chargers as he made his way back to a table. He managed to find one that wasn’t occupied. He still wasn’t entirely convinced this place wasn’t part of the Fade but his stomach was complaining rather loudly so he had to eat something. Finally he glanced around as he sat down, taking in the whole scene. Interesting crowd this, even if they most likely all were demons. He started mentally taking notes, noting how people moved, who they talked to.
Then he remembered, there would be no one to send that to, he was no longer Ben-Hassrath. Fuck he wasn’t even proper Qunari anymore. Tal-Vashoth. The words burned, felt like a brand on his forehead. He wondered if any of the others knew. Could they see it?
Once again he longed some familiar beer, for something to wash away all those thoughts with, and some good company to make him forget, even if it was just for a few hours. Maybe he should try to find some. He leaned over to the nearest person, whispering just loud enough to be heard.
“You know where a fella might find a proper party around here?”
Special Notes:
I am not a native speaker of English and can sometimes slip up on a few things. I will correct them however if you tell me about it. I am also not in the US, but in Europe, which often does lead to timezone shenanigans. I hope it will affect a journal game less though.
